Multisite universityUCL is a multisite university!
Louvain-la-Neuve, Brussels Woluwe, Mons, Tournai, Brussels Saint-Gilles and Charleroi: six campuses where we endeavour to extend the boundaries of knowledge; where we tirelessly pursue fundamental and applied research; where we forge close links with the socio-economic world in our constant quest for excellence; and where we welcome both Belgian and international students, the architects of the future.
1425, UCL founded in Louvain. 1971, UCL reborn in Louvain-la-Neuve, and also in Brussels Woluwe shortly thereafter. In 1995 the university authorities acquired the Maison Lemaître town house, in Charleroi, already with the idea of increasing the higher education opportunities available in the province of Hainaut. In 2010 the Saint-Luc Higher Institutes of Architecture in Brussels and Tournai were officially incorporated into UCL’s Architecture and Architectural Engineering Unit and the Urban and Regional Planning Unit, to form the Faculty of Architecture, Architectural Engineering and Urban Planning (LOCI). This new faculty provides architectural training at the Brussels Saint-Gilles and Tournai sites, as well as training in architectural engineering and an Advanced Master’s degree in urban planning at the Louvain-la-Neuve site. Lastly, on 15 September 2011 the Catholic University of Mons (FUCaM) merged with UCL, under the banner “UCL Mons” – a first in Belgium’s French-speaking Community! This is the first time that two institutions have joined together voluntarily, with the aim of expanding the availability of higher education in the Hainaut region. So UCL is now a multisite university. But that’s not all! It is also a multicultural, multifunctional academic institution teaching a full range of subjects. The specific character of each of the sites, their individual practices, customs and community life, adds a whole new, enriching dimension to the UCL experience, to the benefit of all.
