Cancerology 2010

The new edition of the thematic brochure: « Cancerology 2010» has been prepared by the Research Administration Departments of the Académie universitaire Louvain (FUCaM, FUNDP and UCL), with the valuable help of a peer review committee[1] .

The main objective of the brochure is:

  1. to highlight the excellent level of research in cancerology within the Académie universitaire Louvain;
  2. to promote synergies, to enrich existing scientific and academic partnerships or generate new ones;
  3. to support industrial innovation by raising industrial awareness of the university competencies in Cancerology and, in fine, by improving the quality of health care;
  4. to give public institutions means and tools for a better promotion worldwide of the research.

In addition to being an important public health issue, cancer is a complex pathology, the study of which requires the interaction of several scientific disciplines. Equally, treating cancer diseases is a long and complex process in that it covers both research and medical care aspects.  Therefore only multidisciplinary teams can deal with aspects as various as diagnostic, surgery, drug therapy, radiotherapy, rehabilitation, psychological support, etc.

The level of international cooperation in the research teams within the Académie universitaire Louvain is excellent and is obvious from the brochure.

Those topics are classified in ten categories, according to the main scientific or technological approach:

  • Prevention and Epidemiology,
  • Mechanisms of cancer,
  • Diagnostic – Imaging,
  • Immunology – Genetics,
  • Biomarkers,
  • Clinical study,
  • Anti-cancer treatment,
  • Surgery,
  • Radiotherapy,
  • Psycho-oncology,
  • Research centers and non-profit organizations.
