Learning Languages

Languages : indispensable tools !

It is indispensable for students to know a number of languages so that they can integrate into the multicultural and professional life of our society. As regards language learning, UCL aims to bring every student by the end of their Bachelor’s program to at least level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) of the Council of Europe publié par le Conseil de l'Europe.

Where can I follow a language course at UCL?

The Institut des Langues Vivantes  (the Language Centre)
The ILV is open to all UCL students, and its principal mission is to provide language courses which are included in the various study programs. Some of these courses are specific to the student’s specific program, while others are more general.
There are 14 languages taught:
Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Slovenian, Spanish and Turkish.
The ILV also offers 11 language courses outside the program of studies: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Slovenian and Turkish.

All ILV courses involve e-learning.

The language of instruction and language preparation for international students

At UCL, courses are mostly given in French, which is why a good knowledge of this is vital for most courses.
UCL, in collaboration with the Centre de Langues de Louvain-la-Neuve (CLL), organises during the summer and winter holidays intensive courses of French especially for international students (at a special rate).

During the academic year, the ILV offers a range of courses of French as a foreign language.

Courses taught in other languages

UCL offers some Master’s programs partly or totally in English.

UCL also offfers a certain number of courses in English , particularly in these fields: Law, Economics, Social and Political Sciences, Management, Arts, Science, Applied Science, and Health Sciences.

More details about the language of instruction and the offer of courses in English are available on the faculty websites and in more detail in the various course descriptions (click on the course code).

With a few exceptions, teaching in Spanish, Italian and Dutch is limited to the field of philology.

Student mobility and joint degree programs

UCL offers many student mobility and joint degree opportunities.

UCL exchange students can, at no extra expense, take a course of language before leaving for an exchange university (access procedures).
Incoming exchange students have access to the courses in their program, as well as French courses.
