Service

The first service a university provides to society is to educate free, open minded, critical-thinking men and women who, in their turn, put their talents at the service of their fellow citizens. In order to guarantee fertile education and research at top level, it is essential that both fields stay in continuous contact with the problems and demands of society.

The fruits of academic research are passed on to the business world or to institutions, where they are transformed into products and services that everyone may benefit from, such as new materials, more efficient medication, industrial processes, law reforms, economic models, progress in education or the analysis of social phenomena. Research helps to find new solutions to, sometimes very old, problems. Whether they are solutions to the great challenges of society or modest improvements that find their utility in day to day life, they all spring from UCL’s will to be useful and to justify the use of the collective means that she has been entrusted with.
