Going to and Coming from the Field : Ethical, Emotional and practical challenges

This conference will bring together researchers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds in the social sciences, adopting qualitative and/or quantitative research methods. It will provide space for discussing the multiple ethical, emotional and practical challenges embedded in field research. All presentations will be in either French or English; passive knowledge of both languages is assumed. In addition to plenary sessions, participants will have the opportunity to present their own challenges in parallel sessions. We especially invite young researchers to participate. Excellent papers will be published in one or several peer-reviewed publications. A call for papers and preliminary program can be found in attachment.

The sub-themes of the conference are:
A. Challenges of field-research in polarized or conflict-prone environments;
B. Interactions between Researcher – Informant - Object;
C. Interpreting (conflicting) narratives;
D. Dealing with emotions and positionality: Detachment versus engagement;
E. Ethics and fieldwork post mortem.

Call for Papers
Abstracts of no more than 350 words (English or French) can be submitted by email to . Authors should indicate in which panel they would like to present, and in which language. Submission of a full paper is optional; full papers can be posted on the conference website and the most excellent papers will be taken into consideration for publication.

Cette conférence réunira des chercheur-e-s de diverses disciplines en sciences sociales adoptant des méthodes qualitatives comme quantitatives. Ce sera l’occasion de discuter des multiples défis, éthiques, émotionnels et pratiques, rencontrés sur le terrain de recherche. Toutes les présentations se feront en français ou en anglais ; une connaissance passive des deux langues est nécessaire. En plus des sessions plénières, les participants auront l’opportunité de présenter leurs propres défis en parallèle des sessions. Nous invitons spécialement les jeunes chercheur-e-s à participer. Les meilleurs papiers seront publiés dans des publications avec comité de lecture. Un appel à communications et un programme préliminaire sont disponibles en fichiers attachés.

Les sous-thèmes de la conférence sont :

B. Interactions Chercheur•e – Informateur•rice - Objet ;
C. L’interprétation de discours ;

Appel à communication
Les résumés qui ne font pas plus de 350 mots (en anglais ou en français) peuvent être envoyés à . Les auteur(e)s doivent indiquer dans quels groupes ils/elles veulent présenter, et dans quelle langue. La soumission d’un article complet est facultative ; les articles complets pourraient être postés sur le site internet de la conférence et les meilleurs seront pris en considération pour la publication.
