International researchers/lecturers What do I need to do if I wish to undertake postdoctoral research at UCL?
Before considering applying for a particular research grant, the first step is to find a supervisor who is willing to accept you as part of his or her research unit. You can identify teams working in your research field via the thematic brochures or the “UCL research inventory” tool. We also suggest you browse the web pages of the UCL Research Institutes and Research Centres. How do I finance my postdoctoral research visit to UCL?
There are a number of options for funding international mobility. Depending on your profile (your country of origin, your field of research, how long you wish to spend at UCL, etc.), you can submit an application to a variety of organizations offering financial assistance. Once you’ve made contact with your future UCL supervisor, UCL’s Euraxess Service Centre (euraxess@uclouvain.be) will be able to help you identify the financing schemes for which you may be eligible and can also help you prepare your application in certain cases. Do I need a work permit to do postdoctoral research at UCL?
Any individual who is not a national of one of the member states of the European Economic Area (EEA) is required to hold a valid work permit in order to work in Belgium, with the exception of researchers who come to Belgium under the terms of a hosting agreement (scientific visa).
Who is responsible for applying for the work permit?
This work permit must be obtained before arrival and requires a special procedure. The Human Resources Department is responsible for submitting applications to the relevant Belgian ministry. The procedure for obtaining a permit and the timescale may vary, depending on the status of the individual in question and whether or not the future employee is a Belgian resident.
How long does it take to obtain a visa? Depending on the type of visa requested, the processing time can vary from two or three weeks to three months. The scientific visa procedure is fastest and also grants exemption from the work permit requirement.
Where does UCL stand in international rankings?
UCL is placed 124th in the QS 2010 world ranking, and 2nd in the ranking of comprehensive French-speaking universities. What’s more, it is one of only 20 European universities to have been awarded the ECTS quality label.
Does UCL offer grants to international students?

However, there are some organizations that offer financial assistance to Master’s students. See www.uclouvain.be/en-326654.html. Does UCL offer any accommodation?
