Working environment

 Internet access, WiFi

All students enrolled at UCL are entitled to a faculty e-mail address and have access to the computers in the computer rooms and the libraries. Moreover, all UCL accommodations are equipped with a cable television connection giving access to the internet.

UCL also provides a uniform wireless network using the latest security and ID technology for universal use. The WiFi service covers all lecture rooms, teaching rooms and libraries, plus meeting rooms and other areas where it is justified on mobility grounds. Access conditions are identical for every building.

UCL is a partner in the Eduroam project, permitting transparent access to the wireless networks of all partner universities. This covers a great many universities throughout Europe.

 Information resources

UCL libraries contain two million books and 8,500 journals, in addition to the resources located in research laboratories. Eighty librarians are on hand to guide and assist students in their documentary research efforts. Specialized centres also represent sources of documents for their own subject areas, such as the European Documentation Centre or the Dramatic Arts Centre, which houses more than 30,000 books on the theatre and dramatic arts.

The Libellule system provides access to the catalogues of all the University libraries and to a hundred or so bibliographical databases, such as Medline, Current Contents, Web of Science or SciFinder. Some 3,000 periodicals are available online.

UCL recently took out a subscription to The Scholarly Journal Archive (JSTOR), which provides access to more than 350 scanned periodicals in all fields of science, both human and exact sciences.

Research tools

Abstracts of doctoral theses defended at UCL are published on the web and are accessible to the international scientific community.

Research tools have been specially devised for young researchers with the aim of guiding them to publications that may prove useful when drafting papers, or to databases on current research in other countries. These tools also enable researchers to become familiar with UCL research procedures (intellectual property, code of ethics and assessment).
