Postdoctoral grant holder

Belgian or international researchers with a PhD may receive a postdoctoral grant to conduct research not covered by an employment contract, subject to certain conditions:

  • participation in an international mobility programme;
  • the first grant award must start no more than six years after obtaining their PhD;
  • The total period for which the grant is awarded may not exceed an overall duration of 36 months.

The postdoctoral grant is not taxable, but is subject to employee social security contributions. If the grant holder is Belgian or a national of a country in the European Economic Area, he or she is fully liable for such contributions; if he or she is from another country, liability is limited to health, incapacity and family allowance schemes. Although the gross amount of the grants varies according to the recipient’s native country, the net sums will be identical for everyone.

Contact Dominique Socquet in the Human Resources Department for more information on the status of grant holders.
