Before you leave

If you are leaving Belgium for good, you must return your residence permit to the municipal authority. Also make sure that you cancel your Belgian health insurance and, if applicable, close your bank account. If you are renting accommodation, whether or not it is university-managed, a closing inventory is usually required before your deposit is returned.

For students

If you are in university accommodation, check out the page on “Moving out of your UCL accommodation". You can also have your degree recognized before you leave.

Employees and grant holders who are liable for social security contributions:

When the contract comes to an end, employees must return the following to the Human Resources Department:

   •     their staff card;
   •     their SNCB railcard if applicable.

They will receive the end-of-year bonus and single and double holiday bonuses associated with the services provided no later than the end of the month following the date on which the contract expired. Some funding sources require these sums to be paid at the end of the contract, not the month following expiry of the contract. In this case, the supervisor must notify the Human Resources Department (before the 10th of the month – please contact Rodolphe Wuyts).

The holiday certificate will be sent to the employee’s home address when the holiday bonus is paid. If you are liable for full social security contributions, you may also ask the Human Resources Department for a document enabling you to register as unemployed (contact: Anne Dupon).

Employees leaving Belgium when their contract comes to an end may ask the Human Resources Department (contact: Rodolphe Wuyts) to draw up a form 281.10. This document will enable them to submit a provisional tax return to the tax authorities.
