Objectives and Missions

Motivation

The setting up of the Institute IMCN concretizes the strong scientific interactions that exist for several years between research teams of the three Faculties of the Sciences and Technologies Sector, located in the Lavoisier (former Chemistry Department), Boltzmann/de Serres (former MAPR and CABI Departments) and de Hemptinne (former Physics Department) buildings.

The members of the concerned groups (PCPM, POLY, PAMO, CATA, CIFA, CMAT, CHOM, CSTR, part of DICE) have thus decided to join their forces to form a multidisciplinary and multi-Faculty thematic Institute. These research groups are already closely linked by a series of common research projects (FRFC, ARC, IAP, participation at several regional and European projects or networks), and also share large scientific equipments (XPS, SEM, TEM, AFM, FTIR-Raman, ToF-SIMS, NMR, mass spectrometry, X Ray diffraction, computational means and scientific softwares...). The activities range from fundamental (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and oriented science to technological devices and applications, combining both theoretical and experimental approaches.

Because a significant part of this research is devoted to experimental and modelling aspects, the Institute requires support from specialists gathered around facilities and equipments that are sometimes organized in the form of technology platforms. These platforms are either in-house or organized in cooperation with other groups or Institutes of the Sciences and Technology Sector, or even external.
